Engine Break in....

Postby RomanV » Thu Sep 08, 2005 2:35 am

I came across this article, which I found interesting.

Some of his other articles were quite interesting too. 8)

Although his writing style and web page skills leave a lot to be desired.

Interesting article. Not too much different then my mr2 manual says though really- that also says to warm up then do some full throttle runs/ closed throttle slow downs 10-12 times, then to drive gently (Just no sustained high speed) for the first 500 miles.
Cant believe im still a member here.

Also with new cams or freshly reground cams its important to start the engine on the first 2-3 strokes to properly work harden the cam.

Yes - any time I have had to fly a piston engined aircraft with a new engine just fitted. The engineer says "don't muck around on the ground too long, takeoff and use 100% power for the first 20 minutes, then 80% for the next 40 minutes"
For the first 50 hours of flying the new engine should be used on navigation flights using 75% power. After that the aircraft can do circuits and all the other lower powered flying that occurs in flight training.
Also - they use mineral oil for the first 50 hours before switching to synthetic.

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!
