Turbo SW20 gearboxes.... synchro eaters?

Postby RomanV » Wed Sep 21, 2005 4:46 pm

Ive talked to quite a few people with 3sge powered celicas and SW20s, and they all say that 2nd gear is crunchy. Due to the synchros wearing out.

Now my question is....
Do the turbo gearboxes suffer from this problem too?

Or was it a problem limited to the early NA boxes?
(They got better synchros in the later years IIRC)

In all fairness my gearbox has done over 200,000kms, so its hardly surprising that its crunchy.
It doesnt bother me, Im just curious as to whether this happens to the turbo boxes too. 8)

Early single spinner boxes just need a couple of ham fisted full throttle shifts and you have a buggered 2nd gear synchro. The later model boxes with LSD and electronic speedo drives (12.91+) seem to be better....but are harder to come by and are generally more expensive.

Yep, they all do go crunchy. The gen 3 ones might be ok
1988 KE70 Wagon - Slowly rusting
1990 NA6 MX-5 - because reasons
2018 Ranger - Because workcar
1997 FD3S RX-7 Type R - all brap, all the time
OMG so shiny!

you will find all early 3sge boxes were did not hav the best syncros. Im already on my 2nd box, its a bit stiff downchanging into 2nd but once warmed up hav no troubles. Just a little clunky when cold.

The boxes in 1992+ ST18# and onwards thru the ST20# had better syncros, especially the later SSIII celicas, Al seems to have covered the mr2 side of it
I had vtax :(
