help! olds' fxgt autobox brokeded *FIXED*

Postby 71corona » Fri Sep 09, 2005 2:48 pm

a couple of hours ago dad came walking home and said that he was accelerating and lost traction. lol but what he really meant is that he was accelerating and he lost all drive to the wheels. i went and had a look at the car. the engine is still mint, the electrics respond when you change the gear selector by adjusting idle revs but there doesnt seem to be any mechanical response. its like its in neutral. what has broke?

i think its a 1989 ae92 fxgt 4age automatic

are all auto gearboxes the same across the ae92 corolla range? anyone got a cheap one? anyone willing to fix this for cheap in hawkes bay?

my olds are getting old so any help would be good lol cheers :)

Put it in drive and have a look under the car (from the side in case it takes off!) and look to see if one axle is turning I have seen a few cars where the cv has come off the end of the axle and without a lsd the car wont move with one wheel disconnected.
Tourque converter may has shat itself but not very common for an auto to loose all drive so look at cv first.

Thanks, we had the car jacked up with the front wheels off the ground but neither halfshalfs were turning when in gear. They were freewheeling. The car is locked when it is in park but the other four drive gears are acting like neutral. We plan to tow it to the auto trans specialist to get an assessment.

As in my for sale thread. :)

Was running fine until something went in the auto gearbox. Would cost $1500 to swap in a second-hand transmission and $3000 to fix and recondition the current one. Specialist reckoned that the drive hub has been stripped or something along those lines.

There was no mechanical connection, only a slight coupling perhaps from fluid transfer/momentum. The specialist also presumed that because the engine was changing revs as you went through the gear selector that the hydraulics were still functioning ok. So it would make sense that one of the drive gears has gone. The old man said he felt it snap or whatever at the time.

Shame to see a 4age off the road like that.

i have a working ae101 autobox off a 20v available that you could have for $50 + freight, mechanic shouldn't charge more than 6hours to drop out the old one and put in the new one. not 100% sure what the differances between are, i know the starter motor is on the opposite side but i think the gearbox has mounts for both sides i'll check tomorrow if the weather is better (the ae101 manual ones do)

pm me if you want to buy it.

*FIXED*

Gotta hand it to the old man, he fixed it all himself with a little advice from the transmission shop. He picked up a serviced second hand auto transmission for about seven hundy (which im sure wasnt the cheapest option) but its all in there and it feels pretty responsive when shifting.

Sure beats the $1500 or $3000 options if he got someone to do it for him.

If anyone can do a really cheap free-flow muffler replacement in hawkes bay please send me pm, cos the factory one has got a few holes in it and vibrates and buzzes and totally sux. Cheers.
