im after a new turbo for a 1992 gt starlet (4E-FTE)

just after some opinions on what you guys/girls think would be a good turbo upgrade, not looking on spending mega bucks but still after something decent.

missus had a tdo4l off a gsr on hers - went hard as well make sure you dich the top mount cooler while your at it! They pretty cheap turbo's now to!

Currently I'm running just a highflow CT9, gives good boost but a bit laggy if your running an open system like me.

TD04L seems to be the flavour of the month at present probably cos their cheap, others have used T25's, T28's or T3's. Be careful with T25's tho as they dont like much boost.

At the end of the day it depends on what application you are going to use it for.

I too would be interested on turbo upgrades, and people with experinces running different turbos on standard ecu's
this is for a 4efte conversion into a kp starlet were doing.

The biggest turbo on a 4E-FTE personally was a CT20B it looked huge compared to the original but the word LAG was used a million times in one cruise but it used less gas when you wern't giving it death.

The best turbo upgrade I ahve experienced in a starlet wasn't a 4E-FTE I think it was a 3E-FTE the 12 valve motor it was in my mates 87 starlet Si Turbo.

Pulled the toyota one off and put on a factory CA18DET turbo out of a silvia in, it was an upgrade simple to do and gave it what it needed which was a little more flow rather than more psi.

I'd recommend checking out the aussie starlet forums, the guys over there do some wicked upgrades with amazing results.

At the end of the day the biggest limitation on the starlets isnt the engine size but the factory ecu.

thanks for your posts guys, like 92GTApex said, i too am wanting to chuck in a 4E-FTE into a kp starlet. sounds like the td04l could be a alright option as far as price wise. was just having a scan through trade me and there are a couple going with buynows of $200 so it aint breaking the bank

have used or been in a starlet with all of the above, and any of the above will be better than the standard shitter

check out http://forums.starletcentral.co.nz/ and look in the faq section. there list turbos that members have had on there cars, with pros,cons, comments ect...

I'm assuming it was a turbo EP71/EP7x which would mean it would have been a 2E-TE. The F in that code you quotes mean psuedo-twin-cam (dont wanna get started on that with everyone) and as I'm sure you're aware the 2E is a SOHC engine, and the 3E (or 2E) never came out twin cam either for that matter.

Thanks for clearing that up I know what you mean by suedo cams but I thawt the early model starlet was 12 valve are they still single cam??

2e-telu = 1295cc = single cam

Psuedo-twin-cam because they have 2 cams but only one is driven off the cambelt. Other is driven by gears between the camshafts themselves. Someone people insist on saying its not twin cam and other swear they are.

4e and 5e are twin cam
1e, 2e, and 3e are all single.

The 4e and 5e engines run a single cam belt pully that sits on the end of the exhaust cam but run sissor gears under the rocker cover to drives the inlet cam. As a result people sometimes get confused and call them single cam engines.

The 1e, 2e, and 3e engines however have only a single cam.

yeap same as the 4A-F, still the spark plugs going directly down the middle of the two cams. To the untrianed eye tho i guess...
