whos replaced handbrake cable on AE86 ?

Postby AE85.6 » Wed Oct 05, 2005 1:30 pm

basically my handbrake is crap,
was like that when i got it and it slowly is gettin worse just wandering whos replaced it and how much better it was ?

had a looky around and saw a couple hydraulic kits which would be fun but im hoping a new cable would do the job, sometime in the near future ill be fitting race brake rotors and pads which hopefully will help grip the rears better still.

cheers

I didn't replace mine.
But I did have to modify some AE85 cables to fit on the T series rear I'd gotten. Or rather I got them modified. First time the cable broke! I suspect I'd somehow nicked the cable when I was putting it back on...

The main difference I found (between the two cables I had fitted) was that if you get the length wrong then you run out of adjustment and can't get the handbrake tight enough.

If your handbrake isn't working well. How are you adjusting it?

With mine I got told (and it works) that you should release all the tension first (undo the adjustment nut all the way), then pump the brakes a dozen times (sometimes you actually need to be moving to make this work), then do the nut up again to suit. I've found you might have to do this a couple of times to get it right.
Something about a rachet mechanism in the rear calipers that have to be "reset".

And I think that hydraulic handbrake setups require certs or race license?

ye i thought you loosen the adjustment right off as you said and pump the brakes up with engine off to build up pressure then tighten it up to suit again, but after doing this it is still fairly poo, however i havent tried it moving i was doing this stationary, should i have done this with the engine running also to pressure it differently ?

ye i didnt wanna go the hydraulic way but what about making a cable out of a bigger gauge ??? i spose it would be harder to stretch ?

Yeah. I guess a fatter cable would stretch less. But I reckon that you're real limitation there would come from the connections on either end. I'm not sure if they can be upsized to match. Someone else may know...

I usually adust my handbrake with the engine going. Not sure if it matters.
Try brake while moving. My mechanic said that sometimes the mechanism stick a bit and the pull of the moving disc can help dislodge them. Don't need to be going fast or anything. Just rolling along at a slow jogging speed should be okay.
