Airbag Light

Postby Coriz » Wed Oct 05, 2005 11:20 pm

hmmm just wondering if anyone has any ideas

in my 97 turbo mr2, (dual airbags) when you turn key to on, all the lights in the dash cluster light up, all except the airbag light

HRT checked for any codes but it came up all clear, no codes.

our idea was that the airbags ecu isn't plugged in, if they have one??

still has stock steering wheel, we were told by another party, that the dealership's owner's wife, lost it in the wet, causing damage to the front end.

its not huge damage, one guard has a bit of bog in it, by the looks of things, and the bonnet and front bumper dont match up like factory. So is there any chance the airbags could have gone off, and they never fixed it? Wouldnt the ecu "pull" or "throw" a code? (is that what its called?)

I'd check the airbag bulb in the dash first of all, cheap and simple to do.

I wouldve thought that if there was an airbag issue in the car the airbag light would stay lit

Yes, if it's not coming on at all, they may have just not fixed the airbags and removed to bulb so it would still go through WOF's...

And I suspect it is not possible to check for trouble codes without an operational airbag light.

there are no other lights out on dash cluster

i would have thought they would have thrown a code if the airbags had gone off

are you sure it is simple to check if the bulb is blown? it doesn't look easy lol

is there any other way to check if the airbags are operational or if they had been fixed or not??

It's not usually too hard to get an instrument cluster out, then you just need a multimeter to check the bulb.

Just don't let your other half offer any advice and all should go well...

If the airbag system is the same as other sub systems (eg ABS) the airbag light itself is what shows the trouble codes, if it's been removed or is blown you won't see anything at all.

It is easy but takes a while, all you need is a screwdriver. From memory you need to:
wait until cozmo is asleep ;)
remove the lower dash panel under the steering wheel (4 screws, one in each corner)
lower the steering wheel to it's lowest position
remove the center console trim [remove the gearlever gater and surround (clipped in) ashtray (clipped in), behind the ashtray there are 2 screws, remove these and then the console surround will come out with a small amount of force, unplug the hazard switch and cig lighter]
remove the dash panel that runs behind the steering wheel (there should be one screw at the end that fits under the center console panel, I think the rest are clips but double check)
remove the trim panel above the instrument cluster (clipped in)
you should now have access to 4 screws holding the instrument cluster in, remove these, pull the cluster out as far as possible then reach behind and release the 3 loom plugs and that's it.

You should now be able to manoeuver the cluster out around the steering wheel.

Reverse this to put it back in.

Getting the light working is the easiest thing to try first, after that you really need specialist advice, or a visit from dragonx ;).
