KE20 Brake upgrade

Postby RE20 » Mon Oct 03, 2005 10:24 am

The brakes in my KE20 arnt too good, In the weekend I replaced the shoes and cylinders in the drums and gave the fronts a clean, The front pads didnt need replacing. The brakes work better now but are still not as good as I would like. Are there any bolt on upgrades I can do? I have heard KE70 disks fit? I have replaced the brake fluid with some good stuff.
Any suggestions to get a KE20 stopping good? :P

you dont need a booster. i ran ae86 brakes all round with the standard booster, and that was fine.
the ke20's have the small ball joint on the end of the swing arm, which basicly means you can't put the ke70 etc straight on.

my first upgrade, i put ke30 x-member(just slot the bolt holes about 3mm) and swingarms, this gives you the larger ball joint,so you can put ke70, ae86 etc front struts straight on, and just change the top hat, by putting the ke20 one on the ke70 etc strut. but this also widens the track by a about 4" from memory(i did this back in 2000). you also have to mix and match steering parts to get them longer to match the swing arm.

if you want to run the supra/celica brakes, you need the steering arm of the ta63 carina. as the supra/celica streeing arms run the larger again ball joints, but that carina streering arm fits the ke30 ball joint and the supra/celica strut fits onto it, and again, just swap the top hat. easy as.

to get the camber back to normal with the wider track, i put aw11 front struts in, in the bottom of the hub i had it machined to locate on my ae86 steering arms. the reason i did this was so i could run fwd off set wheels all round, as the diff i had in the back from a corona rt132 disc brake was quite wide. this way i had all the wheels under the guards. the aw11 disc is the same size as ae86.

all these brakes i had in my ke20 at one time and i ran all of them with the standard brake master cylinder.

the last setup i did, i put rack and pinion in.

The easiest way to get around the small balljoint problem is to check out this site T3. They make a bush that is machined to the taper of the small ball joint on the inside and ke70 ae86 etc balljoint on the outside. I ordered a pair ages ago to use on my kp high quality parts

the ke70 does not fit. the ke30 fits. i modifed the ke70 x-member to fit. that way the r&p was all at factory alignment
