FWD Corolla gearbox dilemmas

Postby Cahuna » Thu Oct 06, 2005 4:09 pm

Calling all gearbox gurus... I have some dilemmas with gearboxes for my AE92 Corolla rally car and need advice - Google has't really done anything for me :( . I currently have two gearboxes that came with the car when I bought it, one a 5 speed out of a "later model Corolla with better gearing" which is currently in the car and an unidentified 6 speed that is currently in pieces with stuffed crownwheel and pinion. The one in the car is making some nasty noises and has to come out for remedial work so before I get it reconditioned and put it back in I'd like to try to work out whether it would be cheaper/easier/better to put the 6 speed in instead together with parts I have. I humbly ask for your collective wisdom in answering the following questions:

1. How do I identify the two gearboxes I have? From what I've read so far there are no castings on the gearbox to help and since the gearboxes aren't original to the car I don't have any chassis codes to go from. I'm guessing the 5 speed is a C56 and the 6 speed either a C60 or C160 (are they the same???) but don't know how to tell for sure.

2. Currently the 5 speed has a TRD LSD in it. If I put the 6 speed into the car can I put the diff from the 5 speed into the 6 speed or are they completely different? And if not the entire diffs will the LSD pack fit into the diff for the 6 speed? (I'm guessing the diffs are different but hope I can reuse the LSD portion)

3. If I do need to get a different diff for the 6 speed are the axles the same as for the 5 speed or are the splines different between the two? From what I've read elsewhere I'm guessing that the input shaft from the motor is the same (it will be bolting onto a 4AGE red top).

4. Is the gearshift mechanism (mount in the car and the cables) interchangable? The guy I bought the car from was going to send me the cables etc from the 6 speed but never did, if the mechanism for the 5 speed works just as well I won't bother chasing him for it.

If I can just bolt the diff out of my 5 speed into the 6 speed and have it slot straight into the car without having to change anything else then I'll probably do that as it probably has better ratios for rallying than the 5 speed and will cost about the same to put together, but if I need to start buying new diffs and driveshafts I'll just recondition the 5 speed and save up for the bits I need for the 6 speed.
We know that four-wheel drive doesn't work in a racing car, and I proved to myself that it doesn't work very well for rallycross. I'm absolutely convinced that it has no future in rallying, either, even if the regulations allowed it. - Roger Clark (rallying legend), circa 1976

The diff is swapable the crown and pinion are not the same ratio, the 6speed is closer so you want to bolt the 6speed crown and pinion onto the LSD, The shafts will fit into the diff aswell, just check length but I think there the same.

you will want the 6speed shifter and cables.
You will also want the 6speed end mount I think... not sure?

also the 6speed U have what diff is init? if its LSD pm me ;)

Cheers AceSniper. I think the 6 speed currently has an open diff, I'll check and if its a LSD I'll drop you a line.
