Apparently the earlier 2WD hilux diffs are the correct size and do not need to be shortened, appart from that any hilux diff will be fine but will require it to be shortened to fit standard guards. What you will need to do is chop of all the mounts off the ae-85 diff and hilux diff and reweld the AE-85 mounts onto the hilux diff, also the brakes will need to be changed aswell.

Well all depends on what you want really, how much money you got and whats the car going to be used for? you could adapt some AE-86 rear bakes to suit it but it will be hard to find some, could go for some brakes off a early supra with that have the same stud pattern or go for some bigger factory brakes off a skyline etc.. but the stud stud pattern is different.

not all 2wd hilux's have the short diff they are still too wide. Only old school hiace vans and hilux's have them up to the early eighties. I have found a couple in old early 70's hiaces and hilux's with round headlights even then the old diffs vary slightly in width. As for brakes stuff the ae86 stuff go with gx71 etc rear disks with a different calliper with a better handbrake setup.

to be honest you will find that trying to stop a 900kg car on oppose to a 1600kg hilux the standard drums will prolly be fine, just adapt the stud pattern(if needed)

get the brake shoes reppaded with a decent compound(from memory about $175) and you can spend all that "custom fabricating money" on your front brakes... since they are the ones that do all the work

call race brakes, 0800 brakes, admittedly they wont be able to custom make anything(aside from redoing the shoes) but they can allways give good hindsight

my car is starting with 1hp for every 3kg, and im sticking to torana drums on the rear

food for thought

The drums are freakin huge! sure they will stop great but its a nasty fit when you try sit your 14" old skool rims on there. If your going to restud them to 4*114.3 you may aswell slip on a disk and get a calliper bracket made its hardly a major. Youll save a heap of wieght and not have huge drums on your midget ae86

hi have done the hilux conversion myself on my 86.
i was lucky to get one that i didnt need to shorten.. dont ask me what model it was. sorry.
and it is a hell of a lot of work to do.. unless u have a jig already made up...
the drums are massive as already said and u wont fit ur 14" wheels over them.
there is a number of different stud patterns with these diffs.
if u change to skyline brakes then u will have to run 16" wheels (as i do).. or find some 15" wheels that fit.. (uncommon)...
skyline rear brakes are hard to setup also on this diff.. (handbrake is internal drum)..
u could look at s13 brakes or rx7 ones. also..
