Depending on your access to tools and a workshop do the engine yourself.. its not that hard really. (just leave the machining if any is required to the pro's) but gearboxes are best left to the experts, they are really fiddly and do require a lot of tools.
And shop around for parts..
eg. Warwick will do the head gasket set for under half of repco staff price plus you get genuine toyota quality... (Repcos retail price on the head gasket set is $742)
But repco does ACL race bearings cheaper than Warwick does std toyota bearings.
I'm just about to do a rebuild on the bottom end of my 20v, i'll post a list of parts and costs once i get them all sorted out.
