What are these called?

In the engine bay of an ae82 corolla, where the steering components come thru the firewall and split off to the left and right going towards each wheel

steering rack boots or streering arm boots...something like that

If its the rods you are talking about, then its called a tie rod or steeing rod.

1 is steering rack boot, 2 is the rack, inside on each end will be the rack ends, and the bits between there and the wheels is the tie rod end

Thanks, Ive got a clunking sound comming from this area. When i grab the bar on the passenger side ( which is further to the right of number 2) it can lift it slightly up and down making the knocking sound.

My question is how do i work out what i need to replace?
