Tyre grooving

Postby rolla_fxgt » Fri Dec 16, 2005 12:33 pm

Whats the rules around tyre grooving? as in cutting groves into tyres?

The rears on my fxgt have started rubbing on the inner lip of the guards & have created a nice we groove. Im running 195/50/15's on it & its only seemed to be happening since i last got tyres & when doing the wheel alignment they changed the camber to i think from memory -10 degrees since it has lowering springs in the rear ex japan.

Would this of started to cause the grooving or should i start looking for other causes?

Any help appreciated.

Oh & they're only small groves maybe 1.5mm wide & about the same deep.

Have you had the guards rolled at all or are the still standrard?

If standard then things could get quite messy if left as is, there is only so much a sidewall can miss before it becomes unsafe, I would think about rolling the guards

From my experiance with the Corona (sure not the same car but will give you an idea) it was lowered, 17's with a 45 series profile (now changed to 40 profile) and rolled guards, every now and then a little inner guard rub would occur, left a grove of about 1 - 1.5 mm deep in total, depending on how hard it was thrown in to a corner etc, as long as its not constantly happeneing i.e. while you are driving down the main street with no load in the rear etc then I would just keep an eye on, its not an ideal thing to have happening

If your guards are starting to cut your tyres, I wouldn't be driving round on them too much. Gordon77 just posted a similar topic, and like I said to him, you will need to get your guards rolled or change your tyre size. Tyres with any sort of 'grooving' or 'rubbing' marks on them can be failed on a WOF. Basically they will say that they are unsafe as the side walls have been weakened and could puncture/blow-out during hard cornering. I have personally had a tyre (brand new I might add) blow out on me in this way, and not only did it mak ethe car lose control, it stuffed the mag wheel it was on too!
Get your guards rolled and you will have no problems with tyre 'grooving' after that.

:D

Its not in the sidewall at all, right on the top of the inside edge of the outher tread block.

Might put it up on the jacks in the weekend & have a look at the insides too, havent thought about the balding factor.

Might pay to skip going to curzon from now on.

Because untill they changed the camber it hadnt ever cut the tires & nothing else has changed.

The wheels/tyre combo is the right one for keeping the speedo within tollerance. So might have to think about getting the guards rolled.

So if i was to buy a set of tyres & cut my own tread patteren in them they'd fail? By this i mean cutting more channels in the tread blocks. Like the rally guys do

the only reason race/rally guys cut their tyres is to clear either more water or more mud.it only happens when the tyres available on hand , don't have enough grooves for the conditions.

neg 10? wtf.

so it never used to rub, then they altered the camber and it does.....

to me that sounds like positive caamber. is it doing it both sides?

as for grinding the side walls.... we do that at rallies to hide tyre choice....
its soooooo funny watching a certain other team try and figure out our tyre choice
