Gearboxes: E51 <-> E58 interchangability

Postby ATAl » Sun Dec 04, 2005 6:55 pm

In my ae92 gtz the gearbox (open diff e51) is shot, can a ae101 e58 (also open diff) just connect straight up? Will i have problems with driveshafts or anything else?

I have searched and cannot find anything properly answering this.

Another question: Is there any difference between the lsd and non lsd gearboxes apart from driveshafts and the diff? ie could I get a non lsd box and put an lsd in it and it would then be exactly the same?

some are LSD but not all of them. going by the number of LSD to non LSD ones at the dismantlers i'd say probably 1 in 4 was LSD

most dismantlers cant tell if they are or not
oh and if you dont use the 101 axels in them they will apear to be a open diff

As far as i can tell i have an ae92 gtz non lsd gearbox, it's stuffed, so i'm looking for a new box on trademe. I need to know if i will matter if i end up with a ae101 gearbox or are they all the same anyway.

The lsd question is because i intend on buying an aftermarket lsd for a non lsd box (why buy an lsd box for far more if replacing the diff anyway?) and therefore making it into an lsd box with the use of lsd driveshafts.
Has anyone tried this? Any problems?

a ae 92 box will not need lsd shafts..
its only teh viscous 101 box that has that issue

i recoment getting a torsen diff if your getting new as they are far better suited to a fwd aplicaton than a plate type

well dependant on your aplication

yep going to get a torsen (quaife) diff once i get a replacement box, then rebuild the box with the new diff.

Then the hard part - figure out what driveshafts it needs - i can see this being a nightmare...

But i still need an answer to the original question - can i interchange ae92 gtz and ae101 gtz boxes, ignoring the driveshaft issue?

they will both bolt up the same
the internals are very different

if you use the 101 then it will have a viscous
and you will not get around teh axel problem aside from attually having them

the viscous would be fine for you rpurposes

so
just got buy a 101 axel and gearbox setup and be doen with it...

So what you're saying is that if I got a ae101 lsd box it would fit to the engine and the gearbox mounts, but, even if I had the proper ae92 lsd driveshafts they would not fit the 101 gearbox?

yes 92 axels will not work in a 101

Great, that clears that up. Now for the next part: Is the incompatibility in driveshafts because of a difference in the diff only, or is the casing of the box different somehow?

the 101 has a viscous lsd the viscous has 2 spiles on one side that lock on a comon axel
with the standerd shaft its not long enough on the spline to lock the couplings togeathier

if i remeber right ly the axel is a little loger to acomodate the extra length in spline

cool thanks, but i should clear up my previous question, i meant what is the difference between the ae92 lsd and 101 lsd driveshafts ie what stops the ae92 shafts working with the 101 box (do the 92 and 101 boxes use different lsd diffs?)

if they are ae92 lsd shafts, they should work in an ae101 lsd box
