mounting after market guages in factory slots (56k warning)

Postby gordon77 » Mon Dec 19, 2005 5:57 pm

hey ppl got an ae92 fxgt - its got guages for oil pressure, battery and water temp...
i would like to replace them with some after market guages but put them in the origional holes.

Image

i got an oil pressure guage off my mate to see how they would fit. i filed/sanded out the origional holes a bit to make it fit..

Image

this is what it looks like from the back with the guage in..

Image

now here is the problem... because of the pins on the guage seen above the guage does not fit into the origional housing...

Image

so i thought id drill holes for the pins to stick out and also the lamp power lead but here is the real problem... there is a circuit board behind there and i cant drill through it... duh! (where the two screws are missing is where the factory guage mounts to)

Image

so my dilema, how do i get the guage to fit in there w/o screwing with the factory setup for the other guages??? i thought i could drill through the plastic but not the circuit board and let the circuit board go over the pins with appropriate insulation... will this work???

What are the pins on the guage for? can you cut them down?
It is a myth that emos are contagious, and you may be infected. However, it is still widely accepted to wash your hands after physical contact

there are 3, ground, ignition, and pressure sender. if i cut them (off) then the inner guage will flop around in the housing. i will try and cut them down but not off and see how i go :)

Can you make up a spacer to push the front piece out a bit perhaps?

you 'should' be able to trim them down a bit, still maintaining some thread for the nut to hold to

yeah, i have measured it and it wont fit even if i cut them right off. i think spacers are the go - should i bog and shape or use some other means of adding to the origional cover?

yeah its not an actual pcb as such - its like a thick plastic sheet with the lines running round the back of it. bit hard to explain...

also making spacers is a no go coz the plastic cover that goes over the whole thing get real close to the guage as it is.
