Wheel sizing.

Postby z|gen » Fri Dec 23, 2005 12:27 pm

yo,
need to get some new wheels for the circuit car im building up, but unsure of the correct diameter which i should be using.
the car is a fwd starlet, so its fairly light.

the wheels on the car only just clear the brakes, so need something at least 14", but have been told to use a 15" rim.

any specific reasons for going for the 15" rim over the 14" ?

cheers

Tyre choice/availability I think would be the main one. As you don't want to have HUGE profile tyres, but you don't want incredibly low ones either. You do want to keep a reasonable rolling circumference, and you can probably get 15's that would weigh about the same as 14's

yup, i thought the tyre profile would be one of the main reasons is there much difference in tyre profile with 14"s though?

These days you can choose almost what ever profile for what ever wheel, but remembering that to keep a decent overall rolling circumference with a 14, you'd have to increase the profile of the tyre (you've got a whole inch to make up in height, which equates to a lot in circumference  )

Hmm that last comment was a bit dodgy now I read it....

I think thats the general reasoning though. Obviousley once you start getting bigger is where $$ comes in also!! 15s aren't badly priced these days!

sweet as, iv found some 15"s and some 14"S both within price range, so im going to collect both and test and tune.

That sounds like the best idea, you might find you like driving on one over the other with your suspension set up!!

Check out what compounds and sizes you can get in each size. There's not much around in 14's so 15's will probably be the way to go.
See ya
