Computer Tech Question, anyone in the SATA know.

Postby Adydas » Fri Dec 23, 2005 7:35 pm

Ive done one install with SATA before but i forgot things .

I need to make the Array correct but i cant select anything on the BIOS SATA RAID thing. Its flashing the NOTICE : The Number of sicks is not enuf to cread a raid.

But i made a Single disk install last time so what have i missed this time? something in the bios or is this a known error? the system runs the Normal bios is fine its just this.

SATA shouldn't be too hard to setup Cliff.

IF I decide to go out tonight we'll talk about it...

I think its more the fact the menu freezes and i cant do anything..

Is it the BIOS that's freezing?

Tried flashing it?

its not frozen.. its just the ONLY key that works is ESC!! so its operationg i just cant select " Create array " and i dont know why other than the error message saying " More than 1 disk needed to make a Raid " or what ever i quoted before.. But i know from past use of SATA you dont NEED 2 disks (unless u wish to setup the raid that requires 2).

So why cant i make a single array on 1 disk?

Are you attempting to setup hardware RAID with only one disk? If so you simply can't. RAID is protection for disk failure or a decrease in seek time by using multiple spindles. IE if you loose ONE disk you can still function, or its faster with multiple disks. If you loose your single SATA disk how is RAID going to work? Hence your inability to select it.

Last time with the same pc i still went into the same raid array setup process to make a single disk Array ( i dont belive anything to do with raid as you said thats for backup etc ).

So its not that i cant setup a RAID its that i cant setup an Array. ( i think that makes better sense ).

A hardware raid array needs more than one disk, as redmist says. You could create a software array by mirroring one partition onto another.

Can you go into your bios before the raid flash screen and turn SATA Raid off?

All RAID configurations use multiple disks.

RAID 0 allows disk striping. That is, creating a single volume (C:) from multiple disks.
RAID 1 Disk mirroring. Copying all disk writes to another disk for redundancy.
RAID 5 Striping with striped parity. Uses less disk for reduncancy than 1, and is almost as quick as 0.
RAID 1 0 Disk mirroring of a striped set. Very fast, high level of redundancy, expensive on disks.

What exactly are you attempting to achieve?

you can use a external raid controller to operate a single disc
but no onboard ones do it

Actually a RAID controller with one disk is just a disk controller, you still cant setup a RAID array.

It might be easier if you state what you are trying to achieve exactly ?

As previously stated, and as your disk controllers BIOS is telling you, a RAID array must consist of at least 2 physical disks.

Try looking for JBOD (Just a Bunch Of Disks) mode... that may work... This maybe what you did last time, and I don't know if all RAID controllers have JBOD... Usually they do...
But easier to just not use the SATA from the RAID controller and use the onboard one? Or no onboard SATA controller?
