Gas to go....

Postby jondee86 » Tue Dec 27, 2005 9:42 pm

Put the damper back on and pull the pressure regulator. Do the test again.

In the damper fuel goes up the outside of the hollow bolt, lifts a diaphragm
and then goes down the centre of the bolt to the fuel rail.

heres the pics of the dampener... and the rail.

ok just found out with Looonie how the dampener works, as per here - page 8 - http://www.autoshop101.com/forms/h22.pdf

fuel is meant to force its way UP the smooth unthreaded part of the shaft into the diaphragm area up the top, squeeze past a spring loaded diaphragm in there that i guess dampens the pulses... then flows down the hollow middle, into the fuel rail.

however on my bolt, there is a copper washer round the base of the shaft that is TIGHT on there - NO gap between it and the shaft body - surely this stopped any fuel getting past and up the shaft... or very little leaked past hence my small 5 second runs...

im gonna pry this off and try the bolt again. altho its late, and no exhaust might annoy people.

i'll try it in the morning...

$&#$%! after closely examining the dampener and the weird copper washer i decided to try to pull the washer out of there and see if there was anything jammed behind it that might block the fuel flow. the washer looked mangled and almost cut in two rings, like there was a smaller ring in there. after some wrenching with the pliers i realised, there were TWO washers in there! the normal sized washer had a gap all around it with ample room for fuel to flow. then there was a smaller washer that had jammed itself right into the bigger one, effectively sealing off any path for the fuel to go. cant believe it! i now pulled this offending smaller washer out and the dampener now makes sense in how it works.

im gonna reattach it in the morning and see if this allows fuel to flow into the rail. then i'll reconnect bits and pieces and see if she will fire.

*napoleon dynamite*"...GOSHH!!! IIIDIOTS!"

Jondee thanks for your continued perseverence in tryign to assist me. its really kept me going. perhaps this was the whole problem, and there was nothing wrong with my wiring all this time! shit!

i will update in the morning.....#@#@

Copper washers....

Postby jondee86 » Tue Dec 27, 2005 10:37 pm

No problem. I had these same parts off the 86 not so long ago. From
memory, one of those banjo fittings had a special copper washer, but I
can't be sure which one. The washer was normal on the outside but had
wide "teeth" on the inside.

I'd guess it was on the damper, but in the end I couldn't get the damper
to fit, and left it off. Early model 86's didn't have a damper, so I don't think
it's a critical part. I can take a look in my box of leftovers after work
tomorrow if it's any help.

its alive. idles at like 2500rpm, no intercooler, no exhaust, no radiator overflow... no tacho, and god knows if the oil pres and temp is working. but it is alive! gonna head out to PitStop to get an exhaust put on and maybe fix the intercooler (cant even close the bonnet because intake piping is sticking out the hood!)

what a mission! will post updates soon.. hope no other dramas on my way there and back (ie cops...)

Way to go dude !!!

And along the way you learned a whole bunch of stuff that you would
have missed if it had fired up first turn of the key :) There is ALWAYS
an upside

thanks guys!

yes it was the damned fuel dampener - had an extra washer mistakenly on there, that was totally blocking the gap for the fuel to flow! after all that it was nothing electronic at all. once i cleared that bolt and fuel flow, she ran no problems.

other than the high idle - now i need to find out whats causing that!

definitely learnt a heap of stuff - aside from the hair tearing and frustration, its been good!!! thanks for the help along the way i was getting pretty disheartened there for a while!
