acid dip/sand blast

i need to get my ae86 shell cleaned of all the dirty/oil/paint etc ready for a complete repaint (entire car). i was thnikign to get it acid dipped but have been told on the older cars it is not a good idea as the acid may get trapped inside the chassis rails and start eatting away at it later. is sand blasting just as good? also can it get into everywhere? (there are parts (such as in some of the box sections) that have bare metal due to the seam weldin on the other side.. but are not accessible..)
can anyone who has some experience in this give me some advice

Acid dipping as you have said leave acid trapped in the rails & any other enclosed place. It probably works the best though. Other major hassle is getting a tank big enough to fit a whole shell in. Ae85/86 mightn't be too bad though as I've had anglias/cortina done, but I've always sent anything bigger to rotorua/wellington.

As for Sandblasting, don't do it, the sand gets forced into all the seams & even years later comes out all the seams/cracks. Also sandblasting requires high pressure which makes it easier to ripple panels. The best options for blasting are walnut shells or preferably soda blasting. Soda blasting is lower pressure, doesn't ripple the panels & removes the vast majority of the crap. My brother has just has his rx3 soda blasted as part of it's bare metal & to be honest it'd be the only option I'd consider unless it's a race-car in which case I'd acid dip it, as you'll end up with a lighter shell.

For Sodablasting I think there's a guy in East Tamaki that does it, else there is the guy in Crosbie Road,Pukekohe that we use, who has done heaps of older cars.

do you know what sort of cost i would be loooking at to get the car dipped. where do you think i can possibly get the 86 dipped in auckland.

and what sort of cost would i be looking at to get entrire car soda blasted.

car is going to be road legal racecar... eventually..

ye there is a guy in east tamaki that does it, my flat mate and i went and checked it out a while ago possibly for his mk1 cortina, looked like it did a pretty mean job and left the bare metal really smooth as the soda is not as abrasive as say sand blasting, only thing is id say if you have alot of rust you will still have some work ahead of you as it looks good for taking paint etc off but doesnt really do much to rust from what i saw. and it was fairly costly from memory.

Had my new race car shell media blasted by Color Strip, in Cambridge, it was the best thing I have done in the prep of my new car. It is a very gentle process on the steel , they also striped the plastic bumpers for me as well . And no the shell wasn't left full of grit it came back spotless although their job may have been a bit easyer as the shell was in a rotator so it could be turned over for easy access. When I build another it will definatley the process I use again
