Which exhaust for my car?

Postby Cakky » Fri Dec 30, 2005 1:14 pm

Well, thought I might as well ask the experts as to what route I should be going for an exhaust on my car.

car is an 89 Corolla GT.

preferably spending as little money as I could, what sorta system should I be looking at and what are the relative costs to this. I'm not really after something loud or showy, just something that gives a good improvement over the stock exhaust.

I'm in wellington btw.

2 1/4" mandrel with a couple of resonators and a decent muffler at the back, should sound pretty good and will give an increase over stock 8)

Heaps of info about exhausts around dude, just search the tech forum.
Edit: Which I just shifted it to ;)

I was told I could just go with a cat-back style exhaust system as the piping from the engine back is fairly decent already and I would still get a reasonable power increase?

Or to have the cat removed and replaced with a resonator?

Cheaper options? Worth it?

Sorry for the newbie questions :\

an exhaust will help it flow better, but as for a reasionable power increase, to be honnest, unless its restricted quite a bit (the standard gt ones are not bad imo), the seat of the pants meter will be more placebo than anything else on an exhaust alone mod. just my opinion...
if you do get it done, may as well go from infront of the cat, as its probably useless now anyway. The only reasion to keep it is if you believe they will introduce a law stating all cars need one.

They're supposed to be bringing that very law into place in the next 2 or 3 years iirc. However, on a Rolla from that year, the stock cat would be gummed up and crap at the moment, so you'd probably get a minute improvement from replacing that alone

I know they have been talking about it, but one could also ask if it will be staggered upon what cars require one- eg will a 60's vehicle be exempt etc

in which case then, keep it.

Anyone got any links to the proposed cat law? I wouldnt be surprised if it was just from a certian year that they make it compulsory e.g. 1990 (much like many other wof laws in present existance)...but I guess we will see.
