How much longer for the clutch?

Postby darkmyst » Tue Jan 03, 2006 10:33 pm

My clutch in my KE70 is making it harder to change into second...

ever since I shortened my gear stick its been pretty lumpy.

How much longer you reckon its got before it dies?

I've done a few standstills on a wet surface, that could also be another factor :D

Also, how much damage does a stand still do to the gearbox (a rough percentage of 100% being a new gearbox/clutch - How much % would it take off?)

If your clutch was starting to slip it would probably start off by slipping in 3rd or 4th when accelerating or going up a hill.
When it gets really bad it will slip in almost any gear when you put your foot down.
If it is only second gear and it is hard to get it in gear then it could well be a synchro problem made worse by quicker shifts with the shortened gearstick.
Other opinions on my diagnosis?

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

I'm sorry but how would it be slipping? I'm not sure what slipping means... it doesn't seem to be a problem in third or fourth at the moment. my brother suggested a change of clutch soon but i don't think he knows much

As above, shortening the gearstick gives you less leaverage, and hence makes it harder to change gears- Im guessing you just cut it?

Standstills are not really bennificial to the life of a box- they put alot of strain on it and joined components...

Slipping means that the clutch slipps rather than grips. thats what happens when the clutch wears out- insted of clamping hard on the flywheel it slipps and prevents the power being transfered to the gearbox- this is not the issue going by your description.

think driving up a hill, then you push the clutch pedal in a bit :D, thats what a slipping clutch feels like.

Mmmm toyota boxes, love being bashed into second :D

Maybe you just need to adjust it?

thats a point...is it hydro or cable?
If cable you may not be getting full release and hence harder to change.
however, that would be for all changes, not just 2nd. As above, sounds fairly syncro as is 2nd only.
