Upper Ball Joints

So my car's upper-ball joints need to be replaced. What are they and what do they do? from what I manage to get out of google, they're part of the suspension system... any advice?

they control hub movment, they are very important, cost will depend if the ball joint is part of the upper arm or is removeable

Okay, so what's a hub? and what risks to I run by not getting it fixed ASAP. I will get it fixed..hopefully this week...I just want to know that the car isn't going to explode while I'm getting this thing fixed.
