Why won't it hold an idle? Does it die from lack of revs? or move up and down and up and down (revs).

And yeah, i'd be checking vaccum leaks for a start. If you can't see any hoses/nipples that are not connected then break out the can of ether (engine start) and spray a little bit around the intake piping, but not the accutl filter, im meaning around the throttle bodies etc where there are alot of vaccum hoses. (don't hit the exhaust....).

If the revs suddenly go up it means the car is sucking it in through a leak, which should let you pinpoint it.

That would be a start.

And what do you mean dropped a cylinder? One isnt firing?. In that case, first take that lead off and check there is spark going there, and that its a nice blue stable spark (not erratic yellowy).

My 20v (and lots of others i believe) had a faultly HT lead going from the coil to the dizzy, which was causing misses and "hunting" revs from weak sparks. Replaced lead and sweet as (about $18 from toyota i believe, its got the odd 20v plugs on it, so its hard to find aftermarket).

Or prehaps its just that particular HT lead to that one not firing cylinder?
