Yet another tyre question....

Postby RAZA » Sun Jan 22, 2006 9:06 pm

I'm needing to get some new tyres for my levin sometime soon, and I'm looking for some advice around which size I should get.

At the moment I have 205x50x15's and i'm wondering whether its worth staying with this size or changing down to 195's as they are cheaper and easier to get hold of, and I wonder if they might make my car corner better.

does anyone who knows about this sort of thing know how much this will affect the straight line traction and the lateral grip that I get?

Initially I thought that changing to 195's would decrease the amount of grip but I have a feeling that my wheels are not really wide enough for the 205's so the tyre probably has some sway in it as I corner, which would probably improve if I had a slightly thinner tyre, hopefully improving my handling.

Good to see someone who is thinking about tyre vs rim width.
What size rim do you have?
Toyota factory on my old AE101 GTZ was a 195/55/15 on a 6 inch wide rim.
I put 205/50/15 tyres on those rims... not really a good combo in my opinion.
I have a set of 195/50/15 on a set of 6 1/2 rims on my Marino - side wall of the tyres nice and vertical, not sloping in or out (drift style)
I am about to go 205/50/15 on a set of 7 inch rims

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

Sadly i'm not sure what size the rims are and its a bit tough to measure them with the tyres still on them...

They are 5 spoke advanti's, I'll have to get out the measuring tape and see what I can do.

It should be stamped onto the backside of the rims...
Look for something like:
15x6JJ Which is a 15in diameter 6.5in width...
'86 AE85.5 Levin

I don't claim to know everything... That doesn't mean it isn't true....

I've got 205/50/15's Direzzas on 6.5" rims, and they look and perform fine but if i was to replace them I would probably go back to 195s.

Reason being that after thinking about it the increase in grip I felt was most likley due to better tyres rather than wider tyres.
