flaring / expanding end of pipe, help

Postby beeker » Mon Feb 06, 2006 8:46 pm

I have the radiator thermostat siting in the middle of my lower radiator pipe.

Ideally I would like to flare the ends, and then trust that this, and not the clamp pressure holds the pipe on.

What business/company can do this for me, preferably on the north shore in AK ?
(Assume they apply heat ? Assume I'll need to remove thermostat from T prior ?)

Please excuse my terminology.

thx in advance.

depending on the size, hard to tell from that, an exhaust shop can do it. or off to ya local engineers

put two slits in it with any cutting device on opposite sides of the tube and flare it urself, possibly even weld a rigde onto it!

yea an exhaust shop or engineering place should be able to do it for you. otherwise just get a cone-shaped object that you can sit your pipe ontop of and hit it with a hammer. thats what i done for the exact same thing.

you can hammer sockets into the end, does an excellent job if you can find one the right size/shape :)

failing that then exhaust shops usually have pipe flaring machines, or you can weld a bead on

it sure is, its not flaring.

buy a cheap pair of vice grips, weld some into one jaw and have a small valley piece and then fill the other jaw with a corosponding peak that fits into the valley.
then proceed to swage your pipe with the vice grips, piece by piece around the pipe. I did that on my IC piping, works MINT.

a lot of radiator shops, specially those that make one-offs will have a nice tool for rolling the bead into the pipe.
How far from the engine is the thermostat?
If its too far it wont work, the heated coolant needs to reach the thermostat for it to open
If it doesn't fit, force it.
If it breaks it needed replacing anyway!
