Finding ABS

Postby ollieboy » Sat Feb 18, 2006 12:12 am

I am wondering how easy is it to fin out if your car has ABS. This probably seems like a noob question but its more difficult then you think.

The ABS light doesn't come on when you turn the car on so I assumed it doesnt have ABS but today I was looking in the fuses and there is a fuse for ABS so I am confused. Is there an easy way to tell like a pump or something visible near the disk brakes?

Its a 5afe engine one a Trueno.

Take the fuse out, drive along and plant the brake?

If it has a fuse, then it most likely has ABS, I think..

Depending on the condition of your pads and how good your brakes are you may feel a "tapping/thumping" feeling when you apply the brakes. I dont notice it in my curren, but in my mums holding when you jam the brakes it goes bum bum bum bum and feels like this drumming going on and off... Thats the abs...

If it is anything like my Sentra then there will be a box (in my case around 10cmx15cm - it isn't a small one) on the firewall with a whole lot of plumbing between it and the brake booster. So the first thing I'd do is look at all the lines coming out of the master cylinder and track them through to see where they go - if they go straight to the wheels then chances are you don't have ABS, if it goes into a magic black box then you might.

Also, on the Sentra it also makes a noise when I first start moving the car after starting it as it cycles through its checks and if I hit the pedal hard enough to activate it the pedal pulses beneath my foot and the ABS unit makes a hell of a racket.
We know that four-wheel drive doesn't work in a racing car, and I proved to myself that it doesn't work very well for rallycross. I'm absolutely convinced that it has no future in rallying, either, even if the regulations allowed it. - Roger Clark (rallying legend), circa 1976

follow the brake pipes from the Master cylinder, if they run into a big aluminium unit with heaps of brake pipes (Actuator) its abs, it will have speed sensors around the hubs also if abs is fitted.

drive along a private road.... at ay 60ish km/h and slam the brakes :P if they lock up, usually means no abs, if abs, results will be as explained above
