the engine number has no meaning once its left the factory

i guess i will drive 18 hours to wellintn and back, pay 1000 for an mr2 short block and "hope" it will fit in to my car then.
1)How do I correctly indentify a replacement engine for my car???????????????,
other then having hem both together. All the guy can tell me is its a early 90s model mr2 engine with that number
2)or Can i put any generation 3sgte into my broken gen 2 mr2?

im not a 3sgte expert.. but there are ways

and $1000 is too much for 3sgte short block!
