too much oil?

Postby gordon77 » Mon Feb 27, 2006 6:59 pm

hey ppl checked my oil the other day and it was rather low so me put a litre of oil in and as it was going in i checked the dip stick and it was full as a mofo with about half a litre still in the funnel.

just wondering if there is such thing as too much oil and also on the dip stick it has a full/low level. is this when the engine is hot or cold???

Empty to Full isnt COMPLETELY empty sump to completey full, it only covers a portion of it, not sure how much but roughly 800ml on most, so dont put 4L once its on empty. That is meant to be cold oil all resting in the sump. And yes you can have too much oil, overfill it and see how much blows out the back :P (dont actually)

yes there is such thing as too much oil, especially on a turbo car, where oil can go back up the oil drain, stuff turbo seals etc,

should always test oil level when it's warm and on level ground  seems obvious, but the amount of times i've seen people try it on a lean, my god. :?
