4AGE Flywheels

Postby RoadskiN » Tue Mar 07, 2006 11:19 am

I'm wanting to change the flywheel in my BZG and have been reading up on different brands with their costings and weights and I'm not too sure what to actually get for best bang for buck.

I was originally going to get a Tom's lightweight flywheel http://www.trdsales.com/shop/addprod.asp?productid=184&itemid=184 and it works out to cost like $630NZD and the site says its 3.5kg lighter than the factory flywheel (either the factory one is really heavy or thats a typo)

Then I noticed the Jun and Toda ones for sale which are significantly more expensive than the Tom's one (and with all things... the more you pay, the better you get but I thought TRD/Tom's parts would be best for my AE111)

So basically I'm just asking somebody to clarify a few things for me...

How heavy is the factory flywheel?
Which brands make flywheels for 4AGEs, how much do they cost, and how heavy are they?
Which would be the best choice?

Thanks

Ok, just found out the factory blacktop flywheel weight is 5.9kg which means that Tom's flywheel would be 2.4kg which seems impossible and I'm guessing the Tom's flywheel weight is 3.5kg

I guess my first question is out of the way

Why do you want to go lighter? What else have you done to your motor already? As the blacktop flywheel is pretty light for a stock road car already.

TODA, TRD, JUN, HKS are all options depending on $$$

Correct

Have a good read through this, it will answer all of your questions and some.

I want to increase the acceleration and deceleration of my car. I drive on windy uphills and downhills and I want the response of it to be better.

Edit- Oh, and apart from an intake...this will be my first engine mod (just looking for better response)

The information on our site was taken straight from TOM'S own catalogue.
They haven't allowed for the std blacktop flywheel being lighter than other 4AGE models.
I hadn't noticed that before.

Anyway the TOM'S flywheel is 3.2kg (3.5kg lighter than other 4AGE models).
It was a very well manufactured item made in chrome moly.

Sadly it has recently been discontinued.

The TRD flywheel is 4.3kg and a little more expensive.

Oh, well thats a shame.

So all available flywheels now are 4kg+?

TODA ones are like $1020 but I'm not sure how much they weigh and I don't know what the other brands weigh/cost.

I think you possibly need to do a little more research into the whole lightweight flywheel idea. Having a lightweight flywheel is not a good idea if you are regularly doing hill driving. I'm sure someone else can expand further, I'm not exactly sure how to explain it
