okay, cheers, guess my friends car is just buggered, we thought it might be tyres at first but changed them all twice so I guess it must be buggered.

In theory the clutches should start to wear out on an ageing LSD, therefore having quite the opposite effect.

My mate has a Mitsi L200 ute with a LSD, that will squeal on paint lines and shiny concrete, and that thing is totally standard. But if you want to shear off wheel studs, by all means use the locked diff. Also I'm not sure if lockable/unlockable diffs (might be called Detroit lockers, but I'm not sure) are legal for street use. Just cause you can get away with it in a T Bucket doesn't mean you can do the same in a jappa.

when this starts happening is there anything you can do to fix it, other than buying a new clutch pack which is worth more than the diff head itself? can't you pack some shims behind the clutch plates or something so they grip some more? im not familiar with the internals of LSD's at all but this is what I've heard you can do to some of them.

Yep, you can get them reshimmed and tightened up to and beyond factory specs, will make them good as new. Mark Buckland had his done and cost in the area of $120 so its not all that costly.
