Ae85 -> Ae86 help

Postby slithr » Sun Jul 04, 2004 11:35 am

Hi I have just bought an AE85 manual and after searching through the tech forum I still have a few questions.
From what I have read I can bolt a 4age straight onto my k50 gearbox, so do I use the 4age flywheel and clutch? does the k50 have the same splines on the input shaft as the t50?
If I bought an AE86 rear end would my ae85 driveshaft bolt straight onto the pinion flange on the diff?
Does any other toyota other than AE86 have bigger brakes that bolt straight on (aw11? celica?)?
Does AE86 have power steering that I could bolt on and how do you guys get on drifting with no power steering?
Thanks for any help cause I have just changed from nissans and dont know a lot about toyota model compatability

use 3a flywheel, 4age clutch plate, 3a pressure plate and 3a thrust bearing.
the splines between the k50 and t50 are not the same.
no the diff would not bolt up to a k50 box and driveshaft.
not sure on the brakes sorry, bolt on would pretty much only be ae86 ones, but other upgrades with little modification have been done including skylines, silvia/180sx etc
yes some ae86 came with power steering but i think its better with the rack cause it gives u a better feel for the road.
current: s14 silvia k's.
previous: ae85 levin 4agte, rt84 corona, kp61 starlet.

Your AE85 Driveshaft will bolt up to an AE86 diff, they have the same flange.

Dori, are you positive that the d/shaft won't work? i have a fine spline T-50(same output spline as a K-40/50) mated to an AE86 rear end and i used the AE70(same as AE85)d/shaft. if you use the coarse spline box, a corona d/shaft will fit.

No, wrong :P

4AGE flywheel (its an 8 bolt flywheel, the 4AGE had an 8 bolt crank, 3A is 6 bolt and not capatible with a 4AGE)
You will need a 4AGE pressure plate to bolt to your flywheel
4AGE spigot bearing (get one new, from ripco/toyota/bnt)
3A clutch plate (4AGE spline does not match K50) CLUTCH MAY SLIP
You will also need to fabricate a custom 4-5mm spacer for your K50 thrust as 4AGE flywheel is thinner
You will need the backing plate off your 3A to put on the 4AGE, bolts straight up, need it for the K series box

Please, if you haven't done this before then dont give advice.
Helping ae85coupe do his conversion it was very stressfull with a lack of advice and what was available was bs from people who hadn't even done the work.

hey man, ditched the s13 aye! dont use the power steering, just get a manuel rack with some tie rod end spacers, if pos try and use the power steering knuckles ( bit that bolts to the bottom of the strut ) as these give quicker turning and a bit more lock too,

spacer that slide in between the inner tie rod and the steering rack shaft, add quite abit more lock, good for drifting and three point turns

must work similar to the threaded section i added to my steering between the inner and outer tie rods, the only issue i have is grabbing the chassis rails on hairpins, especially with gravel (soft) set up.

Now for the thrust bearing instead of making a 4-5mm spacer for it on the k50 can you get a thicker bearing if possible to find one to suit?? And is it the bearing itself that's pressed on to the housing that needs spacing or the housing needs spaced behind the housing?

yep me and PumpN sure did get some retarded advice from people

i don't know of any thicker thrust bearings that will fit

also i had to grind some meat out of the inside of the k50 bellhousing to fit the 4age flywheel

the gearbox lasted for a while... till i started doing burnouts/dragging people...but the clutch never slipped

only the very very first blue-top had 6 bolt flywheels, and they are extremely rare

the chances of you getting one = slim

Yip extremely rare to find 6 bolt flywheel with 4age. All the ones i've dealt with have been 8 bolt type
