Alloys or steels?
I was under the impression its a lot harder/more pricey now days to get it done as technically (going by the vir manual) its considered a modification and requires certing. Not that, if done properly anyone would know generally

Definitely requires cert, must be done by a professional wheel repairer and then once the car is certed with them on you can't put them on another car without getting that car certed.

why would you need a cert? I thought the cert would apply to the wheels, not hte car the wheels are on...

I had the centres rip out of widened steel rims on a mini. Wouldn't touch them with a ten foot pole after that experience. Also, watch for the hell offset problems, I used to go through wheel bearings and ball joints constantly.

You need cert as it is outside the level of expertise of a general WoF inspector to determine they are safe. There is no process in place or way for the WoF inspector to be sure the bit of paper you wave at him from the wheel modifier even relates to those wheels or that the work done is up to standard. Generally the certifier will look at the wheels with tyres off if possible.

Just an observation...not in any way a suggestion either way

as above, if you did get it done, make sure its from a good rep place. But then at the end of the day, that will be pretty big cash for what it is...

could also have been a modified set of fairly early mini rims- they used to warp anyway as were smaller gauge metal. Still important to get them done properly though- nice and true etc

Well I prefer them to pretty mags so it will be worth it...
And dont worry...Im not about to head down to the local dodgey engineering place :lol:

Didn't fail on welds ... actually *ripped* the centre out of all the wheel holes. As in, the wheel nuts stayed on, and bits of the wheel stayed bolted in place. Nope, wasn't the 59 - 60 wheels they were thicker than that. Checked for that.
Was truly a very strange failure indeed, but did a wonderful job of putting me off steel wheels.
