Can heatsrink handle the heat?

Postby blackmk3 » Wed Apr 19, 2006 6:23 pm

hey all, im looking into cleaning up a few wires and things under the bonnet of the supra, the thing im wondering is commercial heatsrink from J A Russels handle the underbonnet temperatures? i shdnt imagine itd melt i just dont want it to or catch fire...., the factory wires are coverd in that plastic covering that must displace the heat so the wires dont absorb the heat and crack over time, would heatsrink still give that abality or would the wires take the heat

what do you use?

Thanks heaps

the plastic covering doesn't do much, if anything to protect the wires from heat, even the special thermal covering would only really prevent radiant heat from exhausts etc from damaging wiring.

I've used heat shrink with no problems many times :)

yeh heatshrink doesnt burn too well. i use it on my car errr for work all the time. the stuff with glue in it is real good. going from split loom to plugs etc makes a tidy job and holds it all together. isnt cheap tho

just for fun... you could put some un-shrunken heatshrink under the bonnet and see if it gets hot enough to shrink it as you drive.
I am guessing it will tho

So long as it's not resting on something hot, then it will definately melt this is from experience with the adhesive lined stuff in a commercial application not a car but what it was sitting on wasn't all that hot, not as hot as an exhaust manifold anyhow.

Will only shrink from normal underbonnet temps if is low quality stuff or very close to exhaust manifold touching block or something equally hot, temp has to be hot enough to give you a mild burn to shrink the good tuff down
