manually work out the gear ratios.

the externals are very very close if not all the same, its only the internals that differ

take a look here

Best guide... If it's still in the car
- put gearbox in 1st gear
- get some twink (white typo correction fluid stuff)
- make a mark on the drive shaft and a matching mark on the tailhousing of the gearbox.
- make another pair of marks on the timing pulley etc.
- turn crankshaft and count how many turns
- assistant under car yells when driveshaft has done exactly one rotation.
- about 3.3 turns = W57 or W58 (might be able to tell W57 from W58 by comparing 5th gear ratios W57 0.85, W58 0.78 )
- about 3.6 turns = W55
- about 3.9 turns = W56 or W59, they differ in 3rd gear ratio only (might be 4wd sometimes but I have seen several rwd ones behind diesels)
Out of the car - similar technique but easy to do on your own.
All W gearboxes look the same from the outside except for gearlever position. No way to tell what ratio unless you do the above.

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

this has caused some confusion as the mk2, mk3 and mk4 w58s all look different. With not alot of people realising that mk2s came out with w58s.

best way to tell is with testing the ratios.

Guys, i need to perform this test myself soon. I wrote myself a little test sheet template. Does the following logic / test work ?? I have increased the turn count by 10x to ensure measurment inaccuracies dont stuff up my results.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

To check which W55/57/58 box you have, perform the following test and record your results. Then appraise which box gets a match across all gears.
1st gear test.
turn output shaft 10x
W55 input would turn 35.66 times <enter your results here .........>
W57 input would turn 32.85 times <enter your results here .........>
W58 input would turn 32.85 times <enter your results here .........>

2nd gear test.
turn output shaft 10x
W55 input would turn 20.56 times <enter your results here .........>
W57 input would turn 18.94 times <enter your results here .........>
W58 input would turn 18.94 times <enter your results here .........>

3nd gear test.
turn output shaft 10x
W55 input would turn 13.84 times <enter your results here .........>
W57 input would turn 12.75 times <enter your results here .........>
W58 input would turn 12.75 times <enter your results here .........>

5th gear test.
turn output shaft 10x
W55 input would turn 8.5 times <enter your results here .........>
W57 input would turn 8.61 times <enter your results here .........>
W58 input would turn 7.83 times <enter your results here .........>
