Anyone removed a Nissan 4wd gearbox?

Postby ollieboy » Sun May 21, 2006 1:20 am

Sorry I know its not Toyota but I don't know where else to ask.

I am just wondering if anyone has removed any Nissan 4wd Gearbox(ie: Terrano, Navara etc), they are essentially all the same and was wondering how long it should take? I have had a look and it seems it will be a mission.

Also should I drain gearbox oil before I remove gearbox to make it lighter? Or will it not make much difference

Cheers
Ollie :D

Always drain the fluids from a box before you remove. You have to take off shafts etc, so its just common practice generally.

They are heavy units so thats the main thing to remember when removing, otherwise not too hard. Time is dependant on skills of a person, but with beers and correct tool over a weekend in and out is no issue.

ive done a couple.
if i recall correctly, they come out in 2 parts - gearbox & transfer case.
and they are quite heavy, and yeah, DEFINITELY drain the oil.
but if you've got a decent set of tools and some basic knowledge, as Ae92typeX said, in & out over a weekend should be doable without too much hassle

are you sure that's all you are replacing???

they arn't too bad to get out, but a high lift jack is necessary as the box and transfer are very heavy and bulky.
i think you will need to remove front section of exhaust as it gets in the way .

You will need to remove the front section of the exhaust as it gets in the way, unbolt shafts and drain oils. It's quite considerably heavy and bulky soi keep that in mind. Safety is the main key here. And depending on your skills would depend on how fast it takes you

I hope so. The gearbox only makes bad sounds in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th and reverse and not in 4th and 4th is the only one that doesn't use that bearing. Otherwise it will suck having to replace every bearing, they are 30 bucks each and theres a few. :(

Cheers for your help guys, I might get on to it this week seeming I have a week off school for "study". I may have access to a hoist as well so I can just drop gearbox onto a pallet or something then hoist vehicle up.

If I were you I wouldn't even bother without the hoist as you need to drop the crossmember from under the transfer case and I'd take the transfer case off the gearbox(mind the bolts at the top facing the back of the car, sometimes I forget them). Mark the height of the nuts on the torsion bar adjusters first so you get the right height once your done.
After the case is off the gearbox is not to heavy.

Have fun

They are sluts, need to drop the torsions out, and id say they are in the 100kg weight range. At work we put the engine crane thru the hole in the floor and rap a rope around the box to carry the load for u
