still have starting issues, electrically based

right

Have gotten a new batt, old ones getting cause of the lovely dunedin frosts lately, no joy.
Isnt fuel pump related, i dont think - as it smells flooded when it does finally start.
Car will crash start pretty easily, with good reliability...
However, on a crank it wont start to save itself.

Spark doesnt seem fantastic, but if it was terrible you'd figure it would run like shit all the time.

Whats this ive been hearing from others (matt dunne, mostly) about a relay for starting purposes?

1987 FWD 5afe...

Anything else i need to check....? ive done filters, plugs, checked the leads, new battery, ecu codes are non-existant.

if you can jump start it and it runs and it doesnt start by key it could be a faulty starter mortor or faulty starter motor solenoid

No, no... sorry I didnt make that very clear what I meant to say is if you can roll start/push start your car which basically bypasses the starter motor, and if it starts then you will proberally find that its your starter motor/solenoid not working.

well, what happens is, you crash start it with a decent run up, so its turning pretty quick and it starts fine, albeit a bit hesitant (ie it fires, barely, next cylinder misses, next fires, miss, fire, fire, fire, miss) then it starts fine.

If i crank it from scratch, the car cranks over absolutely fine, but refuses to fire. It can take 30 seconds or so to start it, making it a total pain in the arse...
