quick answer needed: leaned out engine damage turbo?

Postby l1ttle_d3vil » Mon Jun 26, 2006 5:58 pm

just want to know if an engine hasn't been tuned properly and is running lean, and the engine seizes because of this (heat); could this in any way damage the turbo?

cheers.

Posibly what did the oil that came out of it look like?? Shouldn't have done anything but perhaps if the oil temp was high might have done some bearing damage to the turbo??

As above if the engine were to run stupid lean EGTs would go through the roof and could in theory overheat the rotational assembly and prematurely age the bearings.

turbo had only done 1500km since rebuild before the engine seized, is this long enough to do damage to the turbo?
and if it had just been rebuilt would it be more likely to handle that sort of thing? (same as a rebuilt engine handling boost for longer than an older engine already on its way out)

this isn't on my car or anything so dont know what the oil was like or anything like that...

Depends on how the guy drove it but if it was lean enough to sieze it and he's getting the motor rebuilt or a new motor then he may as well get the turbo checked while he's at it - probably by the same guys who did the rebuild for him. Imho if it was lean enough to do the motor it's lean enough to do the turbo, you haven't said how it seized yet just it was running to lean, what was it that gave up the ghost causing everything to stop turning??

If it heat seized, then you could assume the coolant level is low, as excessive lean running on a turbo motor would probably melt holes in the pistons before seizing.
If it was due to low coolant, and the turbo is water cooled, then it could have done some damage.
