'81 Corona Questions

Postby Slinkylinks » Wed Sep 20, 2006 12:13 pm

Hi,

I've just got hold of an '81 Corona, I think tha'd make it an XT130?
First of all, its in very nice condition, but its de-reg. It's an auto, and I'd like to convert it to a manual.

Is there anyone round auckland who'd do this? How much would that be likely to cost, and what if anything do I need to cert it. Is this an easy conversion that I could do myself?

Also, I'm at some point going to be keen to put a new engine in it. I'm after an easy swap any ideas? I was thinking the Holden 202 engine (I've heard that goes straight in) a 4AGE or 4AGZE or 3T-GTE (it has a 3T engine at present)

Cheers for any help,

Matt

de-reg???

i'd say throw it away and get another one, costs a bunch to re rego

do the auto to manual conversion yourself, its piece easy

the holden 202 engine will not bolt straight in, and its a $&#$% ghey engine anyway

3tgte would be the easiest/cheapest option for you

or you could always put a nice 2tgeu in it, thats very very easy and cheap

Ok, so we pass on the holden idea, figured it'd be pretty silly anyway.

I figured that since the car hasnt cost me anything, the bit to get it put back on the road is probably worth it (VTNZ quoted me $295 + reg)

So the gearbox thing. What should I be putting in it, and how do you go about it>? do they just bolt in? how do you do the pedals?

Cheers

grab a t50 gearbox and driveshaft from a manual 3t corona, also get the flywheel, and the pedal box, you will probably have to drill a hole for the clutch master cylinder

everything pretty much bolts right in

have a very good look around the tailgate hinges, pillar and gutters for rust, another common place for them to go is around the seam of the inner guard to chassis rail. these are structural points that could make re-vinning and issue.

as for converting to manual, get a T-50/3T flywheel clutch system etc and you're set. possibly have most of the parts you need.
I've been a bad bad boy. I should read the rules and behave before I get spanked by an admin

Does it need to be certed at all (the gearbox) or can they just be swapped around with no one caring too much?

basicly I want to know if I have to do what before I get the car re-vinned or if I can do it after?

Cheers

Do it after the vin

it only has to be certified if you fabricate gearbox mounts or cut the tunnel, which you will not need to do either of

but being manual may affect the vin, so i suggest doing it after you have a vin
