How to take a 4WD Rav 4 Gbox out??

Any one taken a gear box out of a 4WD 1997 Rav 4 before? It has a 3sfe in it. Im having trouble trying to figer out how to do it. Every thing is off the box, its just i cant see how im going get it out.... Ill need to slide it sideways to get the input shaft out of the clutch but im going to have to rotate the box so it will come out far enough. But to do this im either going to have to take the whole sub frame out as the out put shaft on the transfer case will hit the P/S rack and body (it cant imagine toyota making it that hard and time consuming) or theres another possability. Its hard to explain but, where the rear output shaft for the drive shaft comes out, it looks like that shaft may actually be an extension shaft coming out of the transfer case. IE it may be able to come off and then i shouldnt have a problem with rotating the box. Does any one know if this can be done?

Or is it easy to take the transfer case off the Gbox and leave it behind? Or will it be a bitch trying to seperate the two?

it engin & transfer box have to come out as one tipical toyota with the E-W moter they all do it & its always only about 30mm out of clareing the chassie

So your saying take the engine and Gbox out in one?? Sounds prety extream just for a clutch job. There must be an easier way. I may as well take the subframe off if thats the case as it would be quicker for me to do it that way.

Well there wasnt for my ae95 sprinter, all had to come out the bottom. Fun times....

it is not that bad, with rav4 it is best to undo crossmember/engine mounts alll other small bits (shafts etc.) and drop the whole thing down while lifting the car up, I've seen a few times mechanics pulling the gearbox out from the bottom without taking engine out but they spend more time fiddling...

out the top is faverable but if you have alot of time to muck arround yes you can take out the cross member & all the rest of the gaz & leave the engin mount clostest to the gard done up but loose & tip it all down but its a pain in the ass

Sorry, but theres no silver bullet for this one - its a major pain whichever way you do it. Similar situation to a 5sfe "speed camera shape" camry - its either a major hassle or a fiddly hassle!
