Water Spray on A/A intercooler st185

Postby FoRsaKeN » Fri Oct 06, 2006 12:33 am

Hey guys,
was just wandering...
Anyone ever thought (or tried) a water spray on top mount a/a IC.
I know the heat soak is pretty bad, and figured a quick spray on the IC before you go would mean the IC would cool faster once you start moving.... no??

I know the water itslf wouldn't cool much, but when moving, the water on the IC absorbing the heat would cool fast.

Well.. just random thought
thanks

You're thinking about spraying water on the outside of the core right... If so not quite sure if run off in to the head would be a problem... But it could be...

I would try a fan first if possible. Put it on a speed triggered switch to run only when not moving (or not moving fast). That will help keep the heat soak to a minimum.

Water spray could be used to further improve things. Autospeed had a system that I thought looked really good. It was titled something like...
The worlds best intercooler water spray.

i reckon a fan would be better first before a water sprayer.

With the water sprayer, you'll need something with enough pressure and nozzles small enough to get very tiny droplets - a mist kinda spray.

The autospeed one will do that... but it'd be around about $200-$250 for all the kit.
Dirty old fan... $40?

Back when I had a st185 i made a rangi water sprayer up. Consisted of a 5l fuel container mounted in the boot,a window washer motor, a few metres of thin rubber hose and a bunch of water irrigation nozzles etc.

Worked well at first, but after some time the heat started screwing with the nozzles and they stopped misting, and just dribbled.

But while it was working it did actually help. I noticed the car had more response in traffic driving, and the car ran in "high" boost mode more often

Best way is to get W/A or front mount (W/A is better)

Guess w/a wouldn't give you the lag,etc

Thanks everyone
yea, a nice mist would be great...

With my boost levels (~20-26psi, unfortenatly I cannot do anything about it at the moment) After a 30 min twisty bit country road test drive, while trying to figure out whats with the boost, straight after stoping at my mates place, I put my hand on i/c, while looking at the bloody waste gate actuator, the i/c was cold.
That is ST205 I/C with subaru I/C radiator, and 1 ST165 water pump + 1 Subaru water pump (same items) running constantly, and 30cm I/C radiator fan (either thermo switch or manual).
I doubt I would get that boost responce, temperature efficiency with a front mount, also I don't have space for it, without removing bumper beam ( 10cmx10cm ~3mm steel) and cutting lots of panels for piping to go through...
