AE92 Rear Brake issues

Postby MrOizo » Mon Jan 22, 2007 12:02 pm

Ding dong peoples.

Been trying to tighten up the handbrake in the AE92 and seem to be failing miserably!

I have tighhtened it alot and when tightened, it doesnt seem to make any difference.. thought it was only a slack issue. turns out the lever which the cable connects to is hitting the caliper.

Anyone know why this would be happening?

Almost looks like the handbrake side of the rears is puckered :?

The rear caliper in corollas has a worm gear/ratchet thing (there for compensation for the pads wear) to operate the hand brake - the thing is if the handbrake is overtighten it will never release the mechanism so the worm gear will not readjust for pads for wear hence the weak hand brake.
What you need to do is slacken the hand brake (the lever on the calipers will touch the stopper) and operate the hand brake (from complete down to real tight up) with the foot on the brake so the the mechanism will readjust itself.
If this does not work the worm gear mechanism is probably rusted (which is sometimes possible to free by screwing the caliper piston completely in and out). If that will not work you will have to either get other callipers or disasemble clean, lube (with right lube aswell) and replace the seals at the same time if you want.

also lossen you hand break right off at the leaver inside the car/dash while your doing this

& you can always drive backwids slowley & stomp on the breaks & the self adjuster will take up a bit more slack but make sure the screw inside the car/dash is loose
The faster you go the quicker you get there
