Couple of 4age questions

Postby Hachiroku » Mon Jan 22, 2007 1:03 pm

First, is there a big difference in performance between a smallport and a silvertop? ie is it worth the hassle to make the 20v rwd or would a smallport with some gruntier cams do the trick?

Also, is there any difference between the auto and manual loom/ECU from a smallport motor?

Helpful advice is appreciated as always

well my bigport wasn't too much slower than my mates silvertop trueno, it was quicker than me but not by any stupid amount so I'd say a smallport with some nice cams would be relatively on par with a silvertop.

correct me if i'm wrong i'm just speculating..

While redtop seems very similar to silvertop don't forget that redtop comes in slightly lighter body. The good combo is blacktop in AE82 body... Quiet easy to do aswell... Cheaper than the whole cam/piston route. Should give you very good result with more drivable engine (than a highly modified with big cams).

EDIT: I guess you going for RWD -> to get black top into RWD it requires a lot more modifications (while redtop is straight bolt on), this due to FWD nature of BT.

smallport/silver top boils down to personal preference/what you want the car to do. easier to convert small port to rwd though (water lines & distributor location)

using auto loom in a manual car -> need to bridge inhibitor (sp?) switch

auto loom is a good sign mind, because autos are generally in better condition to by second hand than their manual counterparts

edit: for fun....blacktop + silvertop rods ftw though

Highfive :)
