SW20 MR2 aftermarket steering wheel install problem??

Postby Alex B » Wed Mar 07, 2007 11:13 pm

Just grabbed a Momo wheel to go on the mr2, the spline is correct and fits nicely. The problem is with the horn connection. As you can see, instead of the standard method it has like a plug thing on it. I have a feeling this might have something to do with the moving fog lamps, as it seems to have what looks to be a hall sensor on the bottom of it. Hope this makes sence...

Will get photo up when photobucket is back up...

Cheers Alex

If you take the plastic cover off the metal ring should be underneath..

having said that my boss kit has a 5mm gap between the rings... so im assuming i need another boss kit to make my horn work..

EDIT: the 3 gold screws in the picture should release the bit of plastic im talking about

Let us know how it goes eh?

i had a plastic bit like that on my soarer, i took it off then cut the ring for the horn and bent it out to fill the gap, works fine. my original steering wheel had buttons for cruise control on it but i have done a manual conversion and the parts were never with the shell when i bought it so it was redundant anyway.

yeah basically, i just bent it enough that it would have to compress a little once the boss kit was on, to ensure it would always be pressing against the contact on the boss, i also bent the end over a little where it touches the boss kit.

see my poor mspaint diagram:

I cant believe i didnt think of that... i had some crazy coiled up wire that got caught round all in sundry and made a hell of a mess... Thanks man :D

You just soldered it to the base contacts on the steering colum side?

haha yeah originally i tried a long wire coiled around the steering column soldered to the horn power wire and the spade connector for the horn button, but that failed miserably :P

i didn't solder anything for that solution, i merely got a pair of side cutters and made 1 cut half at the bottom of the ring which powers the horn and bent it in the shape in the picture.

if you want a picture of the actual thing i can put it up at about 5 tonight.

So anyway, yes sorry i should have explaned i took the whole thing apart last night and had the problem of the rings sitting to far from eatch other. The idea of soldering something on there should work. If not il just put a horn button on the dash somewhere, still legal :)
