Diff choices for 350rwhp ae85/6

Postby diss7 » Sat Mar 17, 2007 5:19 pm

Before you flame me and tell me to search, I have and I still have some questions...
I would like to know the options for the rear end for a 350rhwp ae85. It will also have around the 400nm (4.1 ratio) mark. Basically I want to know what is at least as strong as a standard s14 or r33 nissan diff setup.

Obviously Hilux, but I have some questions...

Are they all 6 stud? Are some 5?

I want a ratio around 4.1. Possible?

I know some hilux rear's are LSD, are you able to buy an aftermarket (adjustable) LSD that will fit in?

Is there a particular model/year that I should look for thats going to do most of what I require? Cost? (pre modification to fit the car)

Keen to hear from others who have put stronger rear ends in their hachi's

Thanks.

I can't help you with much, but I can say a little.

I have a hilux diff in my car, it's 4.1 ratio and it has a 1.5 way LSD. You want to get a propper LSD for them though as the standard unit doesn't have lock up ramps from what I've heard.

I'm not sure what it was from and whats been done, but if you like I can try and find out for you. :)

i use old 70's hiace van five stud with toyota 10' rear disk brakes. diff is shim-ed 4.3 surf lsd. and it is true that they have no ramp angles so do tend to open up on high load Cornering (pot hole and sweeper) is this for a track car ?

Thanks for the info

Zak - So you have an aftermarket 1.5way fitted? Any more info you can gather would be great!

passenger pete - Did you shim the diff the same (or similar) way that a R200 Nissan diff can be done? The car will see some track time, circuit and drift, but will remain street reg'd.

Be good if I can get a 5 stud rear with discs already there. Front will be 5 stud also.

The late 70's hiace sounds like a good unit so far...

Or if you can find a mid 90's hiace diff setup. Some of them are lsd but a lower ratio than what your after, 4.3, and they all 5 stud with decent disks on the rear end. Don't think they are as prone to opening up on high load as the hilux ones were but couldn't say for sure. I've seen one used in a pretty high power application and it seemed to hold together not to badly
