Engine Bay prep

Postby deaf_rattle » Sat Mar 24, 2007 6:57 pm

I am currently prepping my engine bay for painting.
Ill probably go the whole nine yards and remove the brake booster and lines and then paint the whole bay like that.

There is some oil and dirt and stuff that im having a hard time removing.

Can anyone recommend a decent spray on cleaner for that sort of thing?
im chewing through cans of degreaser at the moment.

Also, is there anything else one should do while they have the engine bay in this state?

Ill probably remove the air con fittings and have a plate welded in, just to make it look abit smoother.

cheers

Get some paint/rust removing discs from Mitre 10/other hardware place. 3M make them, was another brand too. Will do exactly what you're after

hey matt, if you can, find a grommet possibly from a mk2 that didn't have a/c to block the hole through the firewall, as that way if you need to get wiring say from stereo, or maybe sensor for guages, etc, you have a tidy and easily accessible way through the wall, but will still look tidy enough if you don't run anything through it.

good thinking. i hadnt thought of that. would be the easiest option.

i wonder if they come out with no a/c as an option

aussie export. spray on de-greaser. the best thing to come out of oz for $2.99 a bottle. i buy it by the box ful.

just spray it on and wait 5 min and spay on some more and 5 minutes later hose off. use the whole bottle if u must, for $3 a bottle its cheap from supacheapauto.

if you have any questions about prep/painting then feel free to flick me an email or text or call me. I used to just use some strong detergent type degreaser to do the initial clean, then go over it with wax and grease remover before sanding. Sand with scotch brite or similar to remove the gloss from the factory finish, and you can top coat straight on top of that.
