Blow-off valve selection info & sound gallery

Postby solrac » Sat Apr 21, 2007 3:02 pm

Hi mates,

I'm planning to replace the BOV on my ST185CS. Right now I'm using a
cheapo unit hanging off a Samco T-hose between the IC and the tubby,
this one makes a loud but not too sophisticated (simple "psssh") noise.
The basic sound alone wouldn't be enough for me wanting to replace
it but there are some mechanical design issues with it and I'm also
wanting to put it to a different location in a different way to make it
blow off the surge faster and more efficiently. In fact it's effectiveness
is a more important factor than it's sound but still, when I'm walking
around in the city I'm used hear a lot of great BOV noises out there
so the sound of it is definitely going to be a factor when choosing
the successor.

I would like to try to collect sounds (wav, mp3, etc.) of different BOVs,
like Greddy S/RS/R, Sard R2D2, HKS SSQV, and so on. I guess many
of you could also use this information when choosing a new BOV so
I hope some of you will contribute. This tells you that I'm a naive
optimist, huh? One must be when owning a "Four" you know... ;)

When attaching/linking a sound file, please indicate both the power
level of the car and the boost pressure used if possible because these
factors may alter the sound of those BOVs radically.

Of course any technical comments or advices are also welcome
(not to buy this or that BOV because it fails too often etc. this sort of stuff)

Thanks in advance!

Well, my ideas are:

- almost all digital cameras are capable of recording video with sound.
for example my camera is a very crappy old 3.2Mpixel model can do
320x240 video with fairly good sound though it's limited to 30s in length
but that may be enough for recording some on boost gear changes.

- almost all modern mobile phones are also capable of this, well, my
phone doesn't shine in this area but it's more than 2 years old so
there are lot better ones now

- dictaphone, recording capable cassette/minidisc walkman, a real
video camera come to my mind

If one thinks the sound with video may represent a higher level of
enjoyment then it's no problem for me to watch while listening :)
Otherwise such videos can be demuxed to a video stream and audio
stream to be processed separately.

Well, you are right. Now let's see what I've found:

HKS SSQV:

Greddy Type S:

http://www.935motorsports.com/media05/GreddyTypeS.avi
http://www.935motorsports.com/media05/mark7m001.mp3

Greddy Type RS:

Blitz DD:

Comparison of AGP, Greddy S, HKS SS, TurboXS, Mopar:
http://media.putfile.com/bov15

What I could conclude by listening to the above sounds is that a BOV's
sound can vary greatly. Different car, different boost, even different
spring rate/pre-tension means a different sound with the same BOV.
It seems it's rather hard to predict what a BOV will sound like in
a particular application - this is bad news...

I always have a soft spot for the sound of a GReddy Type S
but for functionality only the SSQV will suffice.
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.

Well, this is exactly what I'm thinking: the Greddy Type-S sounds
great under circumstances (that gorgeous "whip" sound you know :)
but it's too small to blow off air properly and I've heard about it's
diaphragm splitting too often and similar malfunction reports.

The SSQV seems to be a more sophisticated unit. I don't know
about the Greddy RS which has been designed to be reliable in
order to replace the Type-S and I believe it's also bigger than
the Type-S so it may better suit higher flowing setups. The
Greddy Type-R may be just too big. This means that 15psi boost
is the lower limit of what it can be used at and it's large diameter
will ditch any loud sounds I guess. That thing is something for the
500+ bhp category where my car won't ever belong I'm afraid...

So if anyone has a Greddy RS or HKS SSQV on a 3SGTE running
~15psi and around 250-300bhp (e.g. no high-flowing tubby) feel
free to post here some nice sounds ;)

Ive tried a Blitz HKS and a Type S BOV on my old WRX and I liked the BLITZ and HKS one the best they performed the best, I have a GFB MACH 1 on my GT-T and its sounds nice and loud but I prefer a less loud bov but it personal choice supose

all this 'going by sound' bolloux is all well and good, but you are forgettting one key thing. You see i could make the quietest BOV you can find be as loud as anything, and likewise I could make the loudest BOV you can find be quiet as because........ its all to do with where it is placed in regards to the turbo and throttle body.

Closest to the turbo you get the big PSSSSSCHHHHHHH noise, where as right next to the throttle body you get a nice wee pst pst pst noice ala WRC cars. same BOV, totally different noises.

As long as it holds your hi boost setting and you dont get comp surge, thats about all you'll ever need.

ssq I found dont vent enough and give bad comp surge......mud! :P

My Apexi twin chamber BOV got QUITE a different sound to it when I went from stock turbo at 7psi to one twice its size on 1bar - even just cruising around. I'm adding this for interests sake, the only reason I have such a contraption on my car is I don't want my nice big CHRA suffering sudden stops.

well first you have to choose what type of sound you want, the normal pssh or the whip sound from greddy or the butterfly sound.. as for noise, if you have a non plumb back type bov with a trumpet, or even 2 trumpets AND higher boost the sound will be LOUD!

lol well thats all i gota say, ohh i got GFB mach 1 bov on my mr2 turbo and thats LOUD, :P :P (simply psshh noise is all i need) 8) plus it has no hassle venting properly!!!
