No, they are not the same, though it may be possible that the internals will fit.

Given the likely level of damage you'll be better of getting a second hand replacement engine, repairing your's will likely not be a viable option.

I seem to recall a certain toyota parts man saying on the forum that the crank and pistons for the ST246w 3SGTE were slightly different.

Is this the case??

I know it will not affect his finding of a second hand one but I am just being a pedantic pain in the ass. (as usual).

The crank may be the same, but the pulley isn't, neither is the oil pump, sump, or I think the timing cover. All these are needed if you plan on retaining the stock ignition triggers and COP ignition, though you should replace the oil pump anyway. I don't know if they will fit on another gen block.

Also a mod was done to the block that strengthened the area around the water pump to stop block cracking. While this doesn't affect the interchangeability of components as it was done for all Gen II+ replacement block as well, it's nice to have if you're planning on building a high HP engine.

Also, you will probably find that the crank is bent after the effort of punching a rod out of the block, and there will likely be damage to the cylinder head and valves. IME it will be cheaper to source another engine, than try and build one around the existing crankshaft.

interesting.......

only thing..... it looks like toyota superceded the crank p/n.
so either i screwed up back then
or since then toyota have superceded the pre st246 crank to the same as st246.

when checking numbers on the EPC, i cant check if parts with bolt in to other places, but i can check partnumbers. the partnumber will change for the slighest change, weather it be an extra hole, or different suplier
