ae86 and ae85 diffs are same width, you will need to re do the mounts though - they don't bolt straight in. if you don't shorten them you will need fwd offset mags.
i don't see why so many people want to put an ae86 diff into their 4agte or 4agze cars though. they will blow up eventually from behind a stock 4age, so won't stand a chance behind a 4agte or 4agze. a hilux diff will never blow up and:
the older hilux diiffs don't need shortening ifyou run fwd offset mags, same with ae86 diffs.
you need to change the mounts on both the ae86 or hilux diff, so no advantage there in choosing an ae86 diff.
and you can pick up a hilux diff for around $300, then an LSD head on top of that for around $500.
for a stock, non lsd ae86 diff you'll be looking at around $800, then another $400+ for an LSD ... which you'll probably blow up after a little while.
so for alot cheaper you can get a diff which is a 10x stronger and will give you alot less hassles in the future. as you have said though its because of the size of them, but i would seriously consider going for a hilux diff anyway if I were you.
