change turbo manifold design

Postby normality78 » Thu Jun 07, 2007 9:42 pm

Guys
currently im using this turbo manifold on my 7AFTE utilising WRX td04l Turbo

http://img463.imageshack.us/img463/9303/dsc003082aq.jpg

due to the manifold flaw design, i was not able to retain my original radiator as its touched my overflow water jack outlet and i do think the runner pipe was too long.

my fren is going to pass me his turbo manifold which enable me to use back my ori radiator and his runner pipe is slightly shorter. but i notice his runner pipe joint up method was 1-3 and 2-4 which in my own understanding, 1-4 and 2-3 will given the best result. Meanwhile runing visiting some reputable tuner web i also noticed there are some well knowed manufacturer did not follow 1-4 and 2-3 weld up method.

my question is, how well design is my fren turbo manifold? would i be experincing worse turbo respond? As i do thought of fabricating log manifold style, its also not going to be 1-4, 2-3 style as all will connect into 1 common pipe and share out to a flange.

in my opinion it does not matter much with your design as it is a 4 in 1 manifold and turbo is not twin entry.

Because you dont have a divided flange and your using a td04, I would say no difference between the two manifolds in term of cylinder scavenge.

Infact the later of the two looks like it should flow better. I say this because all the pipes are joined parallel pointing toward the turbine. The first has what appears to have previsions for an external wastegate. This would create a 'dead spot' or seperation in the flow causing unnessacary turbulence. Also the first appears to have bad collector design with the runners joining up at odd angles.

Having said all this I cant really comment without looking at it in person, but this should help 8) If I were in your situation, if the second bolted up fine and all clerences were good, id use that one.
