Changing alternator slip ring

Postby tex » Mon Jun 25, 2007 6:32 pm

I know some of you here know wtf i am talking about.

Is it worth while changing the slip ring on an alternator ($15 from pan pacific) or just just find another alternator?

The slip ring has basically worn right down on one field winding.

So if I do just replace the slip ring, how do i reattach the windings back to the slip ring surface?? Are they just press fitted on? Trying to work it out. Might be easier if I actually go an buy a slip ring to see what i will be up against...

Thanks

never done one yet to be honest but wouldn't hurt to go and see what it looks like to give you an idea what you need to do, and they sell the bits so should be able to point you in the right direction

we do them at work all the time being an auto electrian.

In all honesty if you have not done one before, dont even bother trying.

I try to avoid doing them like I try to avoid the plague.

If it was mine i'd get a s/h alternator rather then do slip rings.

we used to get about 50% sucess rate, but noe that we have done a heap more we get about 90% done ok, but they are a bastard to re-attach the windings and make them last.

Yeah well the slip ring is basically off the main rotor shaft and I have cleaned it up. The two connections from the windings come up the shaft in teh groves and are insulated. How do you go about reattaching them back to the new slip ring??? Do the new slip rings come with holes or something and you solder them flush?

It is a GZE alternator, so sweet frick all of them around and the housing is not interchangable with anything else. So just looking at options/

I have another alternator 3vz V10 which I have robbed the rectifier ciruit off and has the same rotor size and height. Might do a couple of measurements and just swap rotors.

Do you guys have a special SST to remove the front pulleys??? wat does it look like?

Thanks for the info.

No, the new slip rings come with the leads attached and you have to join them either down at the bottom between the shaft and the fins, which requires you to chip off the resin type stuff without damaging the connections underneath as they snap off easily, and placing them back in the groove properly so that the bearing will not cut into the lead when you refit it, and requires you to araldite the leads back into place.

A 3 day job.

Glue the bottom where you join it and let it set overnight.
Lay it on it's side and glue one of the leads up the shaft groove. Leave to set overnight
Lay on the otherside and do the same.

99% of the failures are becasue either the connections broke off trying to chip the resin off, or because the customer was in a hurry and we did not let the glue set properly. Use 5 min araldite, mix it, eat it with a heat gun a little, then quickly apply it before it sets. Just because the surface is hard doesnt mean it's set, and there is a shit load of force on it at 7000RPM.

Yes very hard to get, went thru that with someone from here.
The only 4AGZE rotor I have is shorted to earth so no good either.

Yup, we remove them by hand.

Lol, Hold the alt pulley in your hand and use a nut gun with a 22mm socket.
Then remove all the stuff from the back, reg rect etc etc, and the bang the end of the shaft on the bench and the rotor will come out backwards and your left with then rotor in the rear housing, which we press out with a press.

What is the part number off the GZE alternator?
