Auto Inhibitor.

Postby Quint » Fri Jun 29, 2007 1:55 pm

Just finished fixing up my mk1 with a new manual, radiator, belts, seals etc. etc. But it wont start, i've swapped over the auto ecu for the manual one hopeing that'd cure the auto inhibitor, but i'm going to assume that as this DIDN"T fix the problem EG. i still have no crank. that the inhibitor runs straight from gearbox to starter motor.

So if this is the case could anyone confirm this and let me know which two wires in the loom that i need to bridge or a good way of finding out which two wires i should bridge so i can finally get it running under its own power!

Look for the two thick wires which go to the automatic selector maybe.. And find where it goes in the fuse box, then bridge the terminals.

On my car, theres a plug going into the gearbox with 3 wires, to disable the auto inhibitor I crossed the black with blue stripe and black with white striped wires. I read this on some forum, not to sure.

Have you swapped the auto out for a manual? doesnt really say in your post.

on my mk4, the inhibitor was also on one of the trans plugs (not the selector). I had to join the black wire and the black/white wire, might help ya

tgb.mr2 :Yea converted the auto to manual.

Gmacrae: that system Sounds very similiar to my mk3. Differance is There is a loom and then 3 mystery wires coming from near the selector in the mk1 rather than just one large loom. I assumed that they were the inhibitor wires, but which wires to bridge is the million dollar question ;) Would have been simple if it was just two wires, but as it was three i wasn't to sure.

I'll give the solution u suggested a go tgb, hopefully that'll atleast get the car to turn over and at the very worst just a blown fuse!

if you have access to a ecu pinout diagram, the wires i joined were "STA" and "NSW" - starter signal, and neutral start switch - i'd imagine they're called something very similar in your car - just see what colour they are and bobs ur auntie
